There are many different reasons why you might want your ring sized. If too loose, there is the risk of damage or that it may fall off. Too tight, and you’re likely unable to wear it for too long. We know your jewelry is special to you, and by sizing your ring correctly, you can wear it without any discomfort or issues.
How Does Ring Sizing Work?
At Jewelry By Designs, our ring resizing repair services use a laser resizing process to create an overall strong joint that will not have a visible seam. This method is far more efficient and is incredibly beneficial, as there will be no visible trace of your ring being resized, even over time.
Traditional repair services use a torch when repairing or resizing a ring, but when using a torch, solder is used to join the edges together, which can create a weak joint in the ring. This often leaves a “seam” that remains visible and becomes starker when the shine of a ring wears off. These seams are especially more prominent in white gold and platinum.
Laser resizing avoids this seam, as it uses the same metal as the ring to size.

When it comes to ring resizing, we do have some limitations. Correctly sizing a ring will involve removing or adding metal to the bottom of the shank.
To maintain the integrity of the ring and prevent damage, we recommend not sizing a ring up or down by more than 3 sizes.
Additionally, pieces that feature gemstones like diamonds in the band or rings made with elaborate details may be difficult to resize without damaging the integrity or craftsmanship of the piece.
Our team will be upfront and honest with you regarding whether we will resize your ring or not. In the event that sizing your piece would compromise its structure, we may recommend working with our jewelers to create a new custom design that incorporates elements of the original piece.

The cost of resizing a ring can vary widely, based on the type and complexity of the piece. Simple gold bands may only need to be sized up or down for as little as $75, while intricate diamond rings could cost more than $550! This is due to several factors including:
- The type of metal it’s made from
- The width of its band
- How many gemstones are featured in the ring or band
- If it needs to go larger or smaller
- How much size adjustment is required
Depending on the type of metal and design of the ring, it is possible to resize a ring more than once. However, we do not recommend this practice as the metal may begin to thin and weaken with each resize. Instead, it is better to get a new ring that fits correctly from the start whenever possible.
This will depend on the type of ring and the amount of work that needs to be done. Simple gold bands can be sized much faster than more complex rings, for example.
At Jewelry By Designs, our repairs typically run around 2 weeks. We know being away from your rings for that long can be hard, and we do offer an optional rush service for an additional fee to get them back to you faster. Our on-site jeweler will need to inspect your ring first before we can give you an accurate turnaround estimate in case additional work is needed or parts need to be ordered.
In general, most precious metal rings can be resized. This includes gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. But not every ring can be resized safely, such as silver costume jewelry rings that are hollow.
Age, condition, and how much a ring is going up or down can also impact how well a ring can be sized. A newer ring that is going up or down 2 sizes is almost always safe to resize. However, an antique ring that has been worn for decades is going to have a much thinner shank; in those instances a new shank may be required for sizing because the metal is too thin to work with.
Other factors include how many stones are in the ring, if a ring is covered in pave stones there may be a limit to how much the band can expand or contract before putting all the pave stones in jeopardy.
